Many of us are deficient in EFAs.  What is this?  Essential Fatty Acids are polyunsaturated oils=the "good fats".  They are essential because our body does not manufacture them and they must be obtained through our diet on a daily basis for optimal health and well being.  EFA's produce beneficial hormone-like compounds called eicosanoids that affect the function of virtually every system in the body.  The most important are our LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD nutrients responsible for cell flexibility, nerve communications, mood support, and even weight control.

Where Are They Found?
The richest and most beneficial forms are found in cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring.  Borage and evening primrose oils are rich sources of EFA.

Why Are They Important?
Besides the symptoms listed above, the body must receive a constant balanced supply of EFA's to ensure proper eicosanoid production.  These regulate pain and swelling, help maintain proper blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and promote fluidity in nerve transmission.  EFAs are important for many women's health issues.  During pregnancy and lactation, it's especially important for a woman to get adequate amounts of DHA because the baby is drawing upon her supply.  DHA is critical for the healthy development of the brain, eyes, and nervous system.

Heart Health
Fish oils are an excellent source of both EPA and DHA, another long-chain Omega 3, and appears to be beneficial for cardiovascular health by reducing the risk of cardiac arrest and ischemic stroke.  In fact, the evidence is so strong that the American Heart Association has stated that "people who have elevated triglycerides may need two to four grams of EPA and DHA per day provided as a supplement", and the White House has urged the Department of Health and Human Services to revise the nation's dietary guidelines "to include new information that Omega 3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of heart disease".

Psychotherapeutic Action
There has been a link to low seafood intake and major depression, postpartum depression, and schizophrenia, as well as to the severity of depressive symptoms.  A few studies have shown EPA improves symptoms in schizophrenia and depression, and increased time in bipolar disorder.

Protects Against Stress
Low levels of DHA in the body and low consumption of fish have been established as risk factors for age associated cognitive impairments, especially Alzheimer's Disease.

Other benefits include positive effects on skin, arthritis, PMS, breast pain, inflammatory bowel disease, and more.
